The Austin Bulldogs doubled up on the Kempner Cougars by the score of 10-5 on
Tuesday night, splitting their season series against the cats.
Kempner began the scoring for the evening by putting up a two-spot in the top
half of the first inning. They would extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of
the second inning, adding an un-earned run to their total, while holding the
Bulldogs scoreless through two complete.
The Dawgs would get their bats going in the bottom of the third inning, as they
would bat around and put five runs on the board to take a 5-3 lead after three.
The inning would begin with DH Sean Pringle singling to left field, followed
by a walk to LF Andrew Sciba to put two aboard for 2B Nathan McMillan. McMillan
would deliver a two RBI triple to the left center field gap. McMillan would
score the third run of the inning when RF Brock West singled up the middle.
3B Jared Boyle followed with a double to left field; West scoring on the play
when the Cougar short stop mishandled the cut-off throw, allowing Boyle to take
third base. CF Chad Henry collected a ground ball RBI to complete the scoring
for the inning, plating Boyle.
Austin would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Sciba
would reach base by virtue of an error by the Cougar second baseman, and then
moving to third after a stolen base and wild pitch. McMillan followed with a
free pass from the Kempner pitcher, and would steal second to put two runners
in scoring position. SS Tyler Whitaker would take advantage of the opportunity
by hitting a single to left center field, scoring both Bulldog base runners.
Whitaker would score later in the inning when Henry would pick up his second
RBI of the game.
P Cody Brown would make the lead hold, by keeping the vaunted Cougar offense
off of the board in three straight innings, retiring eight batters in a row
at one point.
The Bulldogs would add two more runs to their total in the fifth inning, when
C Chris Miller drew a lead off walk and Sciba would be hit by a pitch. Michael
Brand, pinch-running for Miller, would score on a wild pitch and Sciba would
bring home the Dawg's tenth run of the night on a Whitaker RBI fielders choice.
The Cougs would try to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth inning, scoring
two runs on two hits until 3B Jared Boyle would end the rally by recording his
fourth ground ball putout of the inning to end the game, giving the Dawgs a
comfortable 10-5 victory.
Defensive highlights for the Dawgs included an outfield assisted put out at
third base to end the first inning, as RF Brock West and SS Tyler Whitaker would
team up with 3B Jared Boyle to record the out; along with a spectacular play
by Whitaker to go deep in the hole at SS to gun out the Cougar base runner by
half a step at first, 1B Eric Abney stretching full out to nip the runner.
